چکیده

This paper describes the main aspects of building wireless networks, as described by the eCity idea of municipal networks owned and controlled by a central authority versus the anarchic design of open communities using as a case study Patras Wireless Metropolitan Network. The paper points out the important economic aspects that lead to the rigorous development and notates the main issues when using commercial equipment, as in the hot-city project driven by Cisco and the City of Luxemburg. Some discussion is done to point out the main differences among the two case studies, in terms of offered services, network coverage and the impact to the local societies. The important criteria into characterizing each approach is a discussion on the vision, objectives, and the expected benefits to each of the involved parties. Finally, it is evaluated if such an investment is profitable and whether a wISP should deploy such an infrastructure even if the economic criteria propose otherwise. Finally, the paper concludes on how these could lead to further local business development, improving the value of the offered services.

MetroSim: a planning tool for metropolitan WiFi networks

Massive growth of home wireless networking revives the opportunity to achieve citywide ubiquitous wireless access by building a WiFi overlay based on the principle of broadband sharing. This kind of large-scale overlay network poses new challenges for wireless network planning. In this scenario, the number of possible locations to install public hotspots is larger, by order of magnitude, to tho...

Management of Future Mesh-Based Radio Access Networks

55 Wireless mesh networks combine three key features: the use of wireless transmission , the multi-hop nature of the end-to-end communication, and the availability of multiple paths. While each of these features raises a host of technical issues, at the same time they provide those advantages that make wireless mesh networks appealing. For instance, wireless transmission offers ubiquitous cover...

Proximity Breeds Danger: Emerging Threats in Metro-area Wireless Networks

The growing popularity of wireless networks and mobile devices is starting to attract unwanted attention especially as potential targets for malicious activities reach critical mass. In this study, we try to quantify the threat from large-scale distributed attacks on wireless networks, and, more specifically, wifi networks in densely populated metropolitan areas. We focus on three likely attack...
